FUN FAIR FACTS
The Following is from the book "Cookport, Pennsylvania and the Green Township Community Fair" written by: Dorothy J. Lydic. As well as from generous memories shared by visitors to our fair.
- The Cookport fair was established on October 20, 1917, by Donald Patterson. Mr. Patterson was a supervising principal hired by Indiana County. Mr.Patterson decided to hold a simple school fair for all the one-room school houses in his district. He chose the school house in Cookport, PA as the central location for all the children and their families to come and show off their crafts and produce.
- On October 5, 1918, the 2nd Cookport fair was going to take place, but before the event could happen an outbreak of Polio emerged and forced the fair to cancel. But to take place the next year!
- Because of the vast growth of attenders, in 1917, local community members had an idea to purchase the local Cookport Community Building. The community building was built in 1913, by John W. Henry and it was once used as a roller skating rink.
- In July, 1918, The Green Township Community Association was formed. As well, as the purchase of the Community Building.

- J.C. Leasure of The First National Bank of Cherry Tree procured the money for the premiums. Prize money or Premium money was only awarded to the children. Prize pay outs were in the amount of $1.50, $1.00, and $.50. Ribbons were award for athletic events and stock judging.
- Do you know what was in the Round House? A Merry Go Round until 1923.
- In 1917 Harvey Wise was a participant in the first fair in Green Township.

- Did you know there were 20 schools that participated in the Fair.
- Did you know according to the charter the purpose of the corporation was "to promote and enjoy educational, political agricultural and benevolent activities and for the pleasure and benefits of social enjoyments, amusements, and recreations except dancing and skating; and to this end to purchase and hold necessary lands in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to erect thereon suitable buildings and enclosures."
- In 2011 the band of dancing and skating was abolished!
